The 'disposable' society we've become seems at odds with giving much-needed thought to choosing the right kinds of pets for our homes. Due consideration must be given to the pet's size, breed, temperament, grooming, obedience classes, vet visits and expenses, but more importantly, to the owner's willingness and commitment to care for the animal when it is not convenient to do so, as well as during the times when it is. Not commiting in this way can result in dysfunctional pet guardianship patterns that ultimately lead to surrendering pets to shelters or outright abandonment.
Too many pet owners get caught up in the excitement of having a new kitten or puppy but soon tire of having to clean up after the messes they inevitably make...or they realize too late the costs of vet bills that they cannot afford...or the pet grows and is suddenly not "cute" anymore - the magic fades and the pet owner becomes bored and disinterested.
Having a pet as a family member is a lifetime commitment. We ask that anyone not willing to make this commitment financially and emotionally please not become a pet owner.
We require an application for adoption be submitted before adopting any of the kittens from Ferals For Families.
Oliver was a stray cat who came to our feral colony, but became very friendly and trusting quickly. It was easy to see he would make a great member of someone's family! We put the word out about Oliver, and he was quickly adopted by Lindsay and Joe. He has become an important part of their family, and they later got him a friend to keep him company!
Fees:
Ferals For Families does not profit in any way from the fees we collect for the adoption of the kittens in our care!
Fees are instated strictly for the safety of the animal involved. Many "free to good home" ads attract would-be owners who are not in a position to give animals good homes. There are also, unbelievably, people out there scouring the free ads for kittens that can be used for illegal activities such as dog fighting, or to be used in cruel, archaic and inhumane practices such as animal experimentation.
Fees are far below the actual cost of feeding, housing and caring for each kitten. To those new owners who have been able to give more, FFF is very grateful.
ADOPTION FEE: $30
REFUNDABLE SPAY/NEUTER DEPOSIT: $50
(Your deposit is returned in full upon receipt from your veterinarian that the animal has been spayed or neutered at the appropriate age. This step is crucial in being a responsible pet owner so that we can help stop the overpopulation problem)
Please remember: many of the cats or kittens up for adoption are already spayed or neutered, so the deposit will not apply! This deposit only applies to cats or kittens who have not yet been spayed or neutered!
With the adoption fee, your kitten or cat will have the current vaccinations, wormed, and will have had the rabies vaccine if they are old enough to receive it!
